American Share Market — Prohibited & Restricted Items

Last updated: November 1, 2026

These rules keep American Share Market safe and legal. They apply to listings, services, posts, messages, deliveries, and job posts. Some items are banned everywhere on ASM. Others are allowed only in certain states, with a license, or after ASM reviews the listing. Even if your state allows something, ASM may still say no. Listings that break these rules are removed, and repeat or serious violations end accounts.

Banned on ASM (everywhere)

  1. Food shipped or delivered across state lines. Food is local pickup or in-state delivery only.
  2. Alcohol sales. No sale, checkout, or delivery of beer, wine, cider, mead, spirits, or other alcohol. Licensed wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries may list visits, tastings, events, and non-alcohol products only, marked "21+."
  3. Firearms, ammunition, and weapon parts, including gun parts, frames, receivers, kits, magazines, suppressors, 3D-printed guns, and explosives or fireworks.
  4. Drugs and drug items: illegal drugs, prescription drugs, marijuana or THC products, ingestible CBD, kratom, and drug paraphernalia.
  5. Tobacco and nicotine products, including vapes.
  6. Unsafe or illegal food: home-made foods your state doesn't allow, uninspected meat or poultry sold where inspection is required, wild game meat, and food from unapproved sources.
  7. Recalled, counterfeit, stolen, or fake items, and anything that violates trademarks or copyrights.
  8. Endangered or protected wildlife and their parts; illegally taken plants, fish, or animals; and live animals that are illegal to own or sell where you are.
  9. Animals for fighting, and pet sales your state or locality bans (for example, local bans on commercial dog and cat sales).
  10. Hazardous materials: pesticides not registered for sale, restricted-use pesticides, fuels or chemicals shipped unsafely, and invasive or noxious weeds and pests.
  11. Medical claims: items or services claiming to cure, treat, or prevent disease, and medical devices that need a prescription.
  12. People and services: adult services, anything that exploits people, jobs that require paying to get hired, discriminatory job posts, and pyramid or "get rich" schemes.
  13. Money and identity: securities, investments, ownership shares in a business, crypto offerings, lottery tickets, raffles (unless legally run by a qualified nonprofit), loans, government IDs and documents, and personal information. (Farm Shares and Split-a-Beef shares are pre-paid food, not investments, and are fine.)
  14. Hate and violence: items or posts that promote hate, violence, or terrorism.
  15. Official youth fundraiser products of national organizations (for example, Scout cookies or popcorn) unless the organization allows it.

Allowed only with your state's OK and ASM review

These are "Not allowed" until ASM has reviewed your state's rules and your license. Listings go to review before they show.

  • Raw milk and raw dairy, herd and cow shares — only where your state allows it, local and in-state only, with required labels.
  • Hemp fiber, grain, seed, and plants — with a state or USDA hemp license. No ingestible CBD or THC.
  • Live animals (poultry, livestock, rabbits, fish, bees) — following animal health and transport rules; no live fish across state lines.
  • Meat, poultry, and eggs — inspected, custom-exempt, or small-producer-exempt only, as your state and federal law allow.
  • Wild-harvested mushrooms and wild foods — only where your state allows it, with any required forager certificate.
  • Plants, seeds, and nursery stock — following your state's nursery and quarantine rules.
  • Cottage (home-made) foods — following your state's cottage food rules, labels, and sales limits.
  • Knives, bows, crossbows, and hunting gear (not firearms or ammunition) — where legal, to adults 18+ (or older if the law requires), with ASM review.
  • Pressure canned or acidified foods, baby food, pet food and treats, and supplements — only with the permits your state requires.
  • Anything else your state regulates that isn't on our state rules list yet is treated as not allowed until reviewed.

How a listing is checked

These checks use the State Rules Lookup. They do not replace the list above. A row that says Not reviewed yet stays off until an admin marks it Confirmed. Food never ships or delivers out of the seller's state, even if that state's law allows it.

  • Homemade kitchen. Only product types that state's row allows, sold to individuals for their own use, with the label words checked. Virginia pickles stop at $9,000 of ASM sales a year and warn at $7,500.
  • Inspected kitchen. Add the permit number and expiry. Buyers don't see those. Then you can sell to a business inside your state. Confirmed shared kitchens and county canneries are on Shared kitchens.
  • Eggs. Enter flock size and weekly dozens. Virginia warns at 120 dozen a week and stops above 150 dozen from your own hens.
  • Chickens and turkeys. Inspected plant, or small-farm birds you raised. Virginia: up to 1,000 with no permit, 1,001 to 20,000 with the VDACS exemption permit, stop at 20,000.
  • Rabbit. Virginia needs the VDACS Rabbit Program permit and expiry before the listing goes live.
  • Raw milk. No jug where the row does not allow it, including Virginia. A herd share is a share and a boarding fee, never milk for sale. Herd shares stay hidden in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Wisconsin unless an admin changes that list.
  • Beef, pork, lamb, and goat. Inspected plant number, or a live animal share. Custom-processed meat marked Not for Sale cannot be listed as cuts. Live shares use Split-a-Beef.

Every block says what to do instead and links to the lookup. The first listing in each of these categories waits for a person to review it. Tap Report if a listing looks wrong. The fill-in wording is the share agreement template. It shows only where the lookup allows a herd share or an animal share.
