Stacks of lumber in a Virginia yard, with no people in the frame

Free Drop

Useful leftovers. Tree crews, sawmills, breweries, stables, and builders post what they have. Gardeners, farms, and homesteaders post where a load can be dropped.

The hauler keeps 100% of the priority pay. The market does not hold the money.

Safety notes

  • Wood chips

Wood chips can heat up in a deep pile. Keep fresh chips off plant stems, and ask if the trees were diseased.

  • Logs/firewood rounds

Rounds are heavy and can roll. Green wood needs time to dry before it is burned as firewood.

  • Sawdust and shavings

Sawdust from treated or painted wood is not bedding or garden mulch. Fresh sawdust ties up nitrogen if it is mixed into soil.

  • Manure/compost

Manure should be composted before use on vegetables.

  • Spent brewery grain

Spent grain spoils in 2-5 days in warm weather. Do not leave it sealed in a closed tote.

  • Leaves

Leaves can hide trash or branches. Compost them before using them on a vegetable bed.

  • Straw

Straw can carry weed seed. Do not use moldy bales for animal bedding. Hay is not the same as straw.

  • Used pallets

Take pallets stamped HT (heat treated). Do not take pallets stamped MB, or ones that look chemically stained.

  • IBC totes

Know what was in the tote. Do not reuse a tote that held chemicals, fuel, or waste for drinking water or food.

  • Scrap lumber

Scrap lumber may hide nails, paint, or treatment. Do not burn treated wood, and do not use treated or painted wood where food is grown.

  • Fill dirt

Fill dirt can hide glass, trash, or invasive roots. It is not topsoil unless the poster says so.
